Current Law

SUNucate legislation was enacted after the 2024 update, making New Jersey the most recent state to adopt sunscreen access protections for students. 2026: Adopted SUNucate legislation after multiple failed attempts (S 3324, A 5137, A 2313, S 1803, A 3186, S 1501, A 2957, S 2065, A 1028, S 1548).

Comparison to SUNucate

New Jersey has adopted core SUNucate concepts, including student possession/use; staff assistance. The state does not yet fully mirror the model bill where additional provisions remain available, such as youth camp protections, sun-protective clothing, hats and sunglasses, sun-safe education, or a sunscreen sales-tax exemption.

Opportunities for Improvement

Adopt the full SUNucate model, including student possession and self-application of sunscreen; staff assistance with parental permission; youth camp protections; sun-protective clothing; hats and sunglasses; sun-safe education; and a sunscreen sales-tax exemption.

Medical Spa Safety Act

Current Law

New Jersey does not have any state laws regulating medical spas.

Opportunities for Improvement

New Jersey would greatly benefit from enacting the Medical Spa Safety Act, which would regulate medical spas and keep medical procedures under the oversight of physicians, along with requiring medical directors to have training on all procedures being performed. The model bill also includes additional staff education requirements, notification to the public if a physician is not on-site and options for mandatory adverse event reporting.
