SUNucate

Current Status: Enacted

Current Law

California was an early adopter of SUNucate principles and allows students to possess and use sunscreen at school. 2002: SB 310 and SB 1632 enacted. Students may possess and use sunscreen at school. Staff may assist with parental/guardian permission but are not required. Each school site determines policy on sun-protective clothing and hats. 2015: ACR 198 encouraged sun safety education.

Comparison to the SUNucate Model Bill

California has adopted core SUNucate concepts, including student possession/use; staff assistance; sun-protective clothing; hats/sunglasses. The state does not yet fully mirror the model bill where additional provisions remain available, such as youth camp protections, sun-protective clothing, hats and sunglasses, sun-safe education, or a sunscreen sales-tax exemption.

Medical Spa Safety Act

Current Law

While California does regulate the Corporate Practice of Medicine, there are no laws pertaining to medical spas specifically. The Medical Board of California released guidance on medical spas, stating injection of neuromodulators must be performed by a physician or delegated to an RN or PA under physician supervision.

Opportunities for Improvement

Since there are no laws in place, California would benefit from enacting the Medical Spa Safety Act, which would explicitly regulate medical spas, prevent conflicting Board opinions, and reduce confusion for patients and practitioners.
