Microdermabrasion for Aging Skin
Learn more about treatment options for aging skin.
In microdermabrasion therapy, a special machine applies tiny
rough particles to the face, chest or hands to remove the uppermost layer of
dead skin. The procedure is painless and non-invasive.
Why choose microdermabrasion for aging skin
- Relatively inexpensive yet effective for treating
superficial skin issues.
- Safe for all skin types and colors.
- Does not change skin color.
- Does not cause scarring.
- Minimal recovery time.
Possible risks
- Infection
- Skin irritation
Estimated cost
The average cost for microdermabrasion therapy is about $115
per session. Since most medical insurance companies consider microdermabrasion
a cosmetic procedure, it usually is not covered.
How to prepare for the procedure
- Patients who have had chemical peels, neuromodulator
injection therapy or other skin procedures should consult with their doctor
before receiving microdermabrasion.
- Avoid exfoliating creams for one to three days prior to
treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure prior to treatment.
- Avoid waxing prior to treatment.
- Cleanse face and neck with a non-oily, non-soap based
cleanser before treatment.
What to expect after the procedure
Microdermabrasion recovery time is generally minimal.
Patients should:
- Keep new skin clean and moisturized.
- Apply anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses as needed.
- Use a gentle cleanser.
- Avoid scratching or picking new skin.
- Avoid sun exposure for at least seven days.
- Avoid glycolic, beta hydroxy, retinol, benzyl peroxide and
similar medications for one to two days following treatment.
- Avoid applying prescription retinoid products for three to
seven days after treatment. Patients receiving a series of treatments should
not resume prescription retinoids until after the final treatment.
